It seems that some issues which I, and the rest of the team, thought had been removed long, long ago (when we removed fire64, and some other russians from the team) have come back to the surface. So I feel that we must explain ourselves before we release. I am of course referring to the latest post on Junk’s blog.
The post says that raynorpat used code that was leaked from Team GabeN way back in 2006/2007. This is actually quite wrong. The code was added by the said russian members before he even joined the team in mid 2008 (they had been using his Source3 code before)
However, the current members on the team during the period the code was in our repository (myself, raynorpat and Superbird) did not attempt to remove it until our code was leaked in March. And for that, we apologize.
Also, to add to this, we started scratch from a fresh copy of hl2_src.rar in July, and there is no Source3 code in our current revision.
Perhaps I made a generalizing statement because I was pressed for time when I wrote my blog post. However, even if I give you guys the benefit of the doubt on the subject of code usage, I feel that I should point out that I also mentioned the use of GabeN maps/models. I am of course refering to a few screenshots that surfaced on Raynorpat’s own blog in which he showed screenshots of the leaked Team Fortress 2 that was running Team GabeN’s 2fort map. For a while, even his blog’s header image used to be a screenshot of our 2fort.
I’m not trying to stir shit up, the images have since been taken down, but the fact still remains and it was relevant to the subject matter of my blog post.
Fair enough, but those assets haven’t been used for over a year now. Even if we release a version of Team Fortress 2 (which is looking very unlikely now) it won’t have any assets featured in your version of TF2.
I recognize it was stupid of us to use those in the past, and I apologize for that.
That’s no problem Junk, I fully understand what your position is, and don’t blame you at all for pointing this out / calling us out on it.
Saul and I joined the team before the events which you reference in your post occurred. However, when we did, the state of the code that TAP had was laughable. So I took the initiative of deleting all of the old code, and starting fresh from the vanilla leak code. Once we got that cleaned and compiling, it transformed into the base we are using today.
As it stands, our repository does not contain any materials related to Team Gaben or code leaked from Team Gaben.
We’re on our own just like you guys
The last thing our minds is to start shit. One of my (if not our) goals is to make a clear distinction that we’re not a bunch of random kids screwing with the leak. We’re learning from it, adding to it, and ultimately, producing really cool content with it. We’re not in it for glory, drama, or anything of the sort.
On a final note, I appreciate the tone of your post(s) Junk. Very impartial, but to the point. We’ve tried to have civilized conversations about concerns with other teams, but that ended up with us getting put in a Nazi group and called heretics. The civility means a lot.
I’d like to think that the Grigori days are long gone.
I’m having a hard time believing this.
Believe whatever you want, But I’m telling you we’re not using your shit anymore.
@ScarT: Read what Logan said.
Okay, good now read it again.
I understand you are probably angry over it, but I think the main post explains it very well. It was the russians that added it to the codebase. Why would we continue using your stuff when we have a full team at this point?
You’re calling our stuff shit now? Well that’s interesting. I’m wondering why you’re so offensive about it?
I didn’t mean it like that ScarT. I meant that we’re not using your code, maps, models anymore. And we haven’t for about 12 months now.
I wasn’t trying to cause offense
I don’t really see the point in bringing up events that happened a year ago. Many things have changed since then and we’ve since made our position clear several times. No point crying over spilt milk.
No point in crying over 12 month old shit when both teams have obviously made strides since then.
@ynh: the code you used to have from us is a completely separate branch (old tf2 fixes + v36 engine) – and is completely unrelated to the v37 engine/hl2 stuff we had at the time (whith would’ve had actual progress). Just wanted to make that clear after the “shit” and “oh i’m sure they made that crappy code better by now” comments. I’m not trying to start anything either – just ensuring we’re all on the same page about that code
.
Anyways, your stuff is looking good. I’m looking forward to the release.
@slkandy:
Fair enough. Hopefully we’re ALL on the same page by now.
By “strides” I meant that our respective teams have made major progress (be it using that code or not) since then.
Just realize guys that both teams know their shit. There aren’t any other leak teams (that I can think of) that have accomplished as much as we have, for that, I congratulate everyone. IMO we shouldn’t be arguing but working in unison.
Anyway, your stuff looks great as well, we’ll be waiting for the release
I haven’t ran the tf2 client in a very long time, let alone have time for much of anything else sadly.
At any rate, the leaked media was most notable for still having a changelog of most of the important fixes mentioned which helped out in the beginning, but our focus is on hl2 right now.
